In-Joy with Dawn Grant
By DAVID THEUS
Professional
athletes, corporate executives, and even you and me sometime struggle
with our demons of self doubt. Whether it’s the uncertainty of the
current economy, or the grip of our worst fears that cause us to lose
confidence, help is on its way.
Born
a U.S. Navy brat, Dawn Grant traveled the country with her family
following her father from one base to another, finally settling in
Massachusetts. A graduate of Westfield State University just outside of
Springfield, MA, Grant left Massachusetts with a degree in psychology,
headed for Florida to escape the cold.
After
arriving in Amelia Island, close to relatives and friends, she began
working as a Children’s Case Management worker trying to fulfill her
desire to make a profound impact on the life’s of others. Several years
later, burned out from the bureaucracy - coupled with the feelings of
not making an impact, Grant went on a personal journey, searching for
her own spirituality and direction for her ideal career.
After
reading a text a close friend suggested entitled "Many Lives, Many
Masters by: Brian Weiss, M.D. Grant became intrigued. Weiss, a
traditional psychotherapist - in his practice, was astonished and
skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas
that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety
attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel
messages from "the space between lives," which contained remarkable
revelations about Dr. Weiss's family and his dead son. Using past-life
therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more
meaningful phase of his own career. (source: brianweiss.com)
It
was then that Grant knew she would use hypnosis in her future work to
help people. Now Dawn was the first to admit her uncertainty about
calling herself a "hypnotist". Typically, when one thinks of a
hypnotist, they picture an entertainer making people do things upon
command they would not normally do. This was to be totally different.
After
many hours of training in intense and more in depth techniques, Grant
became a Board Certified Hypnotist, recognized by the National Board of
Hypnosis Education and Certification and accredited by the National
Guild of Hypnotist as a Certified Hypnotherapist. Grant is also trained
and certified as a Certified Forensic Hypnotist and as a HypnoBirthing
Childbirth Educator.
Her
new career has turned out to be a series of progressions. Starting with
helping clients to stop smoking and deal with their weight loss
hurdles, one thing led to another. Helping clients change poor habits
like nail biting and overcoming fears of heights, flying, and even
lizards and snakes occupied the first few years of her now seven plus
years experience. It was her one client who happened to be a high
school level baseball player that opened yet another chapter to her
career.
Hypnosis is a tool
that helps people to relax, it’s during this heightened state of
relaxation where positive suggestions are offered to help change a
particular habit or reinforce a positive trait or attribute that person
might possess. It is this skill Dawn feels is her greatest gift to her
clients, albeit a detriment to her ability to bill for her long term
services. Dawn equips her clients with techniques that allow them to
recognize when they are off task, as it were, and begin to give
themselves positive reinforcing suggestions. Therefore empowering them
to overcome that particular obstacle and remain positive and focused.
Since
this revelation in her practice, she has gone on to work closely with
dozens of professional athletes the likes of Laura Diaz, Will
MacKenzie, Cameron Beckman, Ted Purdy, and even PGA Tour Champion Vijay
Singh, helping him to overcome his battles with his putting and become
the "best putter in the world."
"It’s
always been my desire to have a profound effect on the people I work
with. It’s through this, what I call Mental Training, I’m able to
empower my clients to succeed at whatever challenge they face." Dawn
